Project Overview

This course project puts design thinking into practice. Below are the steps undertaken to examine how a different app concept could potentially help users who want to exercise more.

1. Empathise

In this phase, 10 participants were interviewed who currently do some level of exercise and have a desire to do more. Their responses were coded and placed into an affinity map.

It was important to gauge user feelings and their general behaviours around exercise to understand what their individual challenges and pain points were.

  1. Define

An empathy map was created to capture those thoughts, feelings, and actions. This helped to develop this persona further. From this user needs were noted and the problem statement from the user point of view was defined.

User: A hybrid worker who works 9–5 plus commutes for half an hour when they go into the office, 5 days a week.

Need: To find time to do some form of non-time-consuming physical exercise during their busy day.

Insight: The user knows exercising is beneficial for their health and like the results of exercise. They are energised by exercise but find motivation at the gym lacking.

  1. Ideate

Brainstorming and building upon user needs with the problem statement in mind led to the following main ideas to explore further:

  • Contextually-focused exercise sessions

  • High impact in short bursts

  • Private workouts for small spaces

  1. Prototype

Sketches and hybrid wireframes were created to explore how these ideas could help this user improve their exercise habits. These wireframes are identify areas for further exploration and require additional user feedback to validate the user journey created.

The designs focused on specific areas of the journey for example, the initial profile setup and guiding questionnaire to produce a personalised schedule. It looked at the assessment page design, the dashboard and library of bitesize videos.

  1. Testing

Guerrilla testing on the wireframe was done to find any major usability issues. This brought up key questions around the user journey and app design. This consolidated user experience best practice along with actual user behaviour insights to make amends on the placement of elements and contrast.

Next steps

To further develop this concept, the input of fitness SMEs is needed along with continued user feedback and testing for this audience. The testing of notification messaging to help nudge users at the right moments will bring this concept to life. Measuring user feedback in further qualitative testing with journals would be a helpful next testing approach to validating the suggested features.

This project demonstrates how an effective problem statement can lead to ideating on concepts that could develop further into high-fidelity designs. It relies on continued feedback to ensure it addressed user needs of making exercise more accessible and less overwhelming.
